Fluenz Spanish App

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended . . ., November 8, 2012By Buben - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Fluenz Spanish (Latin America) 1+2+3+4+5 with supplemental Audio CDs and Podcasts (DVD-ROM)My husband and I have been using Fluenz to study Spanish for the past several months. We are currently about one-third of the way through the fourth level. Here is my assessment of the pros/cons:PROS1. Goes through the sessions in a methodical and systematic way. The first lessons in the first and second levels may be a little slow for some, particularly if you have previously studied Spanish. We found that Sonia's tutorial videos were unnecessary for us in the earlier stages, and we often skipped these. But definitely by the third level, we found the tutorials to be useful.2. I am not sure how it works, but the methodology seems to drill the vocabulary and grammar into your brain. I think it must be all the repetition -- you are listening to the words, translating those same words, repeating the dialogue, typing the dialogue, etc. We are also using books, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and a tutor, but I find that the sentences and vocabulary I learn through Fluenz are really sticking with me in a permanent way.3. There is a useful emphasis on employing 'helping' verbs, so that you don't need to worry about conjugations of so many verbs. For example, using 'ir,' 'poder,' 'tener que,' 'deber,' or 'querer' in conjugated form coupled with the infinitive means that you don't have to learn all of the conjugations for the substantive verbs.4. Only limited vocabulary is introduced. In some ways, this is a con, because when we are finished with Level 5, we expect that we will still not know many, many necessary/ordinary words. However, because the vocabulary is limited, you really seem to learn it.5. If you are an adult, it's hard to go to a special class. I think we are learning as much through Fluenz as we would through a class, and perhaps even more because of the learning technique, which involves a lot of writing.CONS1. Sonia Gil can be grating. I admire that she is an entrepreneur, and I think it's fantastic that she's doing this interesting business. However, her constant exhortations that 'we are doing great!' 'great job!' 'congratulations!' 'you have learned so much!' can drive one crazy. She also has an annoying tendency to give you tips for remembering new words that are totally obvious -- e.g., you can remember 'simpatico' ('nice' in Spanish) by thinking of the word 'sympathetic,' or you can remember 'terminar' ('to finish' in Spanish) by thinking of the word 'terminate' or 'teminator.' Duh. What I would really like are ways to remember words like 'alquilar' or 'quedarse,' which do not seem at all obvious to me ('to rent' and 'to stay' in Spanish, respectively). Also, for each lesson, we have to see Sonia three times -- an intro, a tutorial, and a conclusion. Typically, the intro and the conclusion are a complete waste of time -- a bunch of 'practice makes perfect,' 'great job,' 'I'm so excited,' but from time to time, there is actually substantive information about the language, so I usually listen to these.2. There is an exercise in the series where you match the pictures with the words. This seems to be a major waste of time -- I don't think I've ever missed any of these. All of the parts of the rest of the program seems to be useful.3. There is a lot of typing, and, typically, if you don't match exactly the way something is typed, your entry is not considered correct. There are a number of instances where a word could be placed in a couple of different places in the sentence (e.g., 'tambien' for 'also'), but only one way is accepted. The program is designed in some instances to accept multiple formats, if there is more than one right answer, but it's probably not possible in all instances. On balance, I strongly recommend this program if you are looking for a self-teaching approach for learning Spanish. I wish there were more advanced levels after Level 5 -- I would definitely purchase them, if there were. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be 'fluent' at all after Level 5 -- but I do think we'll be comfortable ordering, going to a hotel, renting a car, and basic conversation. I don't think this is a deficiency in the methodology/program, just that it is hard to learn another language.
