With World Emoji Day on July 17, you could see a higher onslaught of emojis in your messages than usual. And while a series of unicorns lighting up your phone is probably never unwelcome, sometimes you might get sent an emoji that's just downright mysterious. For those wondering what the emoji question mark in a box means, you might be surprised to know that it's your phone's way of telling you it's time for an update.

Why are there all these memes about A (question mark in a box) all of a sudden? Unanswered I️ keep seeing memes where some of the text has been replaced by a capital A and a box with a question mark in it.

Remember how few emojis there were when the keyboard first came out? Every so often, an emoji update is released, and people are given a whole new slew of cartoon images to help express their emotions via text. But if your phone hasn't been updated recently, this might lead to a slight problem.

For people with iPhones, the question mark inside of a box (as seen below) performs the same function that the little cartoon alien inside of a box used to: it's a notification that your phone needs to be updated to the latest version of iOS in order to see whatever new emoji a friend is sending you. And for people with Androids, you likely see a blank rectangle without any question mark inside of it, according to Emojipedia.

So when you get that little question mark in a box, or that little blank rectangle, it means that a friend is using an emoji that's only available in a newer software version.

Depending on what type of person you are, this can be either a good or bad thing. Updating your phone can be a super easy fix, but if you can't stand change, it might not be as great. And if you're having trouble downloading the new update because of storage issues, don't sweat it β€” here are some tips on how to quickly free up storage on your iPhone, and how to free up storage on your Android.

In 2019, 230 new emojis (including new skin and gender variations) were given approval for release at various points throughout the year (depending on what device you're working with), according to Emojipedia. Per Emojipedia, the latest emojis include a wide range of soon-to-be favorites. In the animal category, new arrivals include a sloth, a skunk, an emotional support dog, an otter, and a flamingo. The 2019 update also represents the latest effort to be inclusive in the keyboard, offering up emoji people with various disabilities, and emojis that allow handholding between two different skin colors. These emojis should be available across all major phone types at various points throughout the year, Emojipedia reports.

Apple has confirmed a bug in iOS which causes 'question mark boxes' to appear in place of the letter β€œi”.

Users across the web are noticing tweets, messages, and other content showing a letter β€œA” followed by a question mark in a box.

Proof that my β€œI” changes to that. :| @AppleSupportpic.twitter.com/7K9ikR9DkU

β€” flava (αƒ¦Λ˜βŒ£Λ˜αƒ¦) β™« (@flavavicious) November 5, 2017

This issue is being caused by iOS 11.1 which has an auto-correct bug that inserts this broken string when the user tries to type the letter β€œi”.

Update: Apple released iOS 11.1.1 on November 9, 2017. This update fixes the autocorrect bug for all users. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install to update to this version of iOS and stop the letter β€œi” autocorrecting the wrong way.

Other variations of the issue may show the malformed letter β€œi” as:

Question
  • # ⍰ (number sign followed by a question mark in a box)
  • A ⍰ (letter A followed by a question mark in a box)
  • ! ⍰ (exclamation mark followed by a question mark in a box)
  • A π„˜ (letter A followed by a multiple horizontal lines or an empty box)

Apple Support is currently respondingtousersata rate of one per minute on Twitter about this issue.

Apple confirmed to Emojipedia that a fix is on the way, stating:

β€œWe are aware of this autocorrect bug. A fix will be released very soon.”

Joanna Stern at The Wall Street Journal reports that the issue will be resolved in this week’s public and developer beta releases.[1]

In a support document, Apple explains the issue:

β€œIf you updated your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 11.1 and find that when you type the letter β€œi” it autocorrects to the letter β€œA” with a symbol”

Above: How this bug looks to affected iOS 11.1 users.

The suggested workaround for this bug is to use the text replacement feature built into iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
  2. Tap +.
  3. For Phrase, type an upper-case 'I'. For Shortcut, type a lower-case 'i.'

This isn't ideal, but the document does note this is only β€œuntil it’s fixed in a future software update”. Which is hopefully very soon.

What's really going on is that the letter 'I' is being appended with an invisible character known as Variation Selector 16 when auto-correct kicks in to replace the lowercase 'i'.

This VS-16 character is intended to be used to make the previous character have emoji appearance.[2] When used in conjunction with the letter 'I' it displays in some apps as 'A ⍰'.

The correct behaviour should be to ignore the invisible variation selector if the previous character doesn't have an emoji version.

If you're just seeing this in tweets from your friends or other people across the web, I'm sorry to say but there isn't much you can do about it.

In fact, it might be hard at a glance to tell whether you're missing an emoji that your system doesn't support, or if it's due to this iOS bug.

Usually a missing character box is indicative of a missing emoji, but in the tell-tale sign here is the capital letter 'A' which precedes the question mark box.

Workaround:

  • If you see text with a capital 'A' followed by a missing character box, read it as if it says 'I'.
