The third and fourth numbers in the serial number on the data plate are the year of manufacture for Payne, so the one shown below is from 2008. This format has been used from the mid-1980s to the present.

The more recent Payne units we have seen don’t require you to know which numbers are the year of manufacture. Some of them, like the one below, state it clearly at the bottom of the data plate.

The Serial Number of the Furnace, Air Handler or Outdoor Unit depending on the equipment you have. Some Manufacturer's use Revision Numbers, Series Numbers, Product Numbers or Manufacturer's Numbers found usually where you found the Model and Serial Numbers. FURNACE AGE CHART AMANA: For tonnage refer to FLA & RLA. For age use the serial number and the 'B-L-A-C-K-H. Day-Night, Payne the system changed. In the new systm the first. Serial number would have been made before 1984 and would require contact with the factory. Rheem/Ruud: Before 1974 the first 2 digits indicated the year.

Age: Four digits of serial number indicate date of manufacture where first two indicate the week and the third and fourth are the year. In the 1960s and early ‘70s this was the last four digits. More recently date of manufacture information is found closer to the middle of the serial number. Example: xxxx1872 = 18th week of 1972.

How can I tell the age of a Unitary Products air conditioner or heat pump from the serial number?

There are two different serial number formats for Unitary Products. Up until 2004, the third letter of the serial number was used to denote year of manufacture by the letter code below:

A = 1971, 1992. B = 1972, 1993
C = 1973, 1994. D = 1974, 1995
E = 1975, 1996. F = 1976, 1997
G = 1977, 1998. H = 1978, 1999
J = 1979, 2000. K = 1980, 2001
L = 1981, 2002 M = 1982, 2003
N = 1983, 2004 P = 1984
R = 1985 S = 1986 T = 1987
V = 1988. W = 1989. X = 1990
Y = 1991

So the serial number below indicates that it was manufactured in 1996, based on condition of the unit.

From 2004 to the present, the first two numbers in the serial number, located at the second and fourth characters, are the year of manufacture. So this serial number shows that it was manufactured in 2009.
